ODU's PhD in English integrates writing, rhetoric, discourse, technology, and textual studies. You will examine texts in a variety of overlapping and sometimes competing language-based worlds. You'll focus on texts and media when it comes to form, purpose, technology, audience, cultural location, and communities. Focus your studies on literature, media, rhetoric, and more. Requires two Summer Doctoral Institutes at ODU's main campus.

This program is designed for students who plan to transfer to a college or university for a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science in English, Creative Writing or Writing and/or Rhetoric as an entry-level professional writer. Electives should be chosen carefully to meet requirements of the transfer institution.
Students will will learn how to organize events, including meetings, educational conferences, and business conventions and exhibitions. Coordination of these events, to include finances, logistics, registering guests, and use of technology and audiovisual equipment will be covered. This program also emphasizes the importance of working with vendor contracts and surveying attendees to obtain event feedback. Coursework in this program can be applied to an associate degree; work with an advisor to determine the best way to use this certificate to achieve your degree.
